The Carlsons ~ A Family Business Since 1948 Arthur Carlson, Senior 1907-1996, came to the Red Lake area as a young man from Sweden. In 1929, there were no roads here - just a trading post and a major gold rush. He found exactly what he was seeking, an adventurous life in the wilderness. He hunted, trapped, fished and traveled great distances by canoe. He married a partner, Florence, who had the same feeling for the land. In 1948, they began constructing the first fly-in fishing lodge in the area. Now more than half a century later, Florence is still at Viking Island as the gardener and historian. Arthur's son Hugh, wife Enid and their kids, Arthur, Gwyneth and Harriet continue the tradition of providing memorable fishing vacations in the wilderness.
Hugh and his brother Craig have operated Viking Outposts for 30 years. The business has grown over the years to 12 deluxe outpost cabins and a float plane air service.
Our loyal guests return year after year, introducing sons, daughters and grandchildren to the great Canadian wilderness and the sport of fishing. We can't imagine a better living: great people, great country, great fishing.
